Open Question: How can a white individual get the same benefits of any other race?

Example, 2 students apply for a college, ONe has a slightly higher GPA, much more involved. College resume top notch, The other not as impressive yet gets accepted and the ohter does not, The individual with the lower GPA happens to be of color, the other a white female. How and why does this happen?
